Rescate Costero: Protecting Our Shores Means Protecting Our Future

In Puerto Rico, coastal areas are far more than recreational spaces or scenic landscapes. They serve as natural barriers against storm surges, provide critical habitats for biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of thousands of communities. Yet these vital zones are deteriorating at an accelerated pace due to coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and the impacts of climate change, an urgent reality that calls for commitment, sustained action, and nature-based solutions.

In response to this challenge, FirstBank is entering the third year of its "Rescate Costero" (Coastal Rescue) program, a multisectoral reforestation initiative focused on restoring vulnerable coastal areas through the planting of native trees. After planting more than 19,000 trees along over 33,000 linear feet of coastline during its first two years, the Bank reaffirms its commitment to protecting Puerto Rico's shoreline as it advances toward its goal of planting 25,000 trees over a three-year period. The initiative aims to strengthen Puerto Rico's environmental and community resilience by promoting coastal conservation as an investment in the Island's present and future well-being.

What Is Rescate Costero?

Rescate Costero is a program dedicated to the recovery of coastal ecosystems through reforestation with native species, environmental education, and community engagement. Its approach goes beyond tree planting; it seeks to protect Puerto Rico's coastline, mitigate erosion, and raise awareness about the vital role coastal zones play as natural defenses against climate impacts.

The native species used in the reforestation process are well adapted to coastal conditions, helping stabilize soil, reduce the impact of tides, and contribute to the long-term health of coastal ecosystems.

Why Is Coastal Reforestation So Important?

Coastal reforestation is one of the most effective nature-based solutions for addressing climate change. Trees and coastal vegetation help to:

  • Reduce soil erosion

  • Protect nearby communities from storm surges

  • Capture carbon dioxide (CO₂)

  • Preserve biodiversity

  • Improve air quality and overall environmental conditions

In addition, restoring coastlines helps maintain ecological balance and strengthens natural infrastructure, which over time proves to be more sustainable than artificial solutions.

Environmental Impact with Measurable Results

One of the defining characteristics of Rescate Costero is its tangible environmental impact. Coastal reforestation efforts have made it possible to project a potential reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating that planting trees is a concrete and measurable action against climate change.

Each tree planted represents a direct contribution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening coastal ecosystems that benefit communities across the Island.

A Community-Driven Effort

Rescate Costero also serves as a platform for community engagement. Volunteers, students, and partner organizations actively participate in planting activities, transforming each event into a collaborative and educational experience.

The initiative encourages civic participation, promotes environmental education, and strengthens a shared sense of responsibility toward Puerto Rico’s natural resources. Engaging communities in the protection of their coastlines is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of these efforts.

Environmental Education as the Foundation for Change

Environmental protection begins with awareness. For this reason, Rescate Costero incorporates educational components that help participants understand the importance of coastal ecosystems and the impact of individual and collective actions.

By combining education, volunteerism, and hands-on action, the program helps shape more informed citizens who are actively committed to Puerto Rico's environmental future.

Partnerships That Multiply Impact

A key pillar of Rescate Costero is its collaboration with a network of more than a dozen strategic partners, including municipalities, private-sector companies, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations. These partners contribute technical expertise, scientific knowledge, and community-based management to maximize the impact of each reforestation effort.

Among these partnerships is Vida Marina, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the University of Puerto Rico at Aguadilla, recognized for its scientific work in the relocation and restoration of coastal dunes. Through this collaboration, Rescate Costero complements geomorphological coastal restoration efforts by strategically planting native trees and vegetation, creating natural ecological barriers that reinforce dune stability in the long term.

Looking Ahead

Protecting our coastlines is a shared responsibility. Initiatives like Rescate Costero demonstrate that when different sectors come together around a common purpose, meaningful and lasting change is possible.

Safeguarding the coastline is not just about preserving the scenery—it is about investing in the safety, resilience, and quality of life of the people and communities that today and tomorrow call Puerto Rico home.
