Sedan

A sedan generally has five available seats in the front and back rows. The rear seat can accommodate up to two to three people. A hatchback is slightly different from a sedan, as the vehicle’s trunk is usually accessible from the back seat.

If more room is needed, the back row is typically easy to recline to create cargo space. A sedan is a passenger vehicle with four passenger doors and five seating spaces in two rows. The rear seats are usually roomy enough to accommodate at least two adults or three small children.

The trunk normally does not communicate with the rear seat, and has a windowless lid. Sedans are the most common type of vehicle on the market, making them the standard by which all vehicles are judged. These vehicles are best suited for single people, couples without children, and regular-sized families.

Coupe

A coupe is a compact two-door car and it’s smaller than a sedan. It can have a single front row with two seats, or a second row in the rear with three additional seats.

The coupe is a passenger car  with only two doors with a fixed roof. It's shorter than a sedan or hatchback, and the rear seats generally aren’t roomy enough to accommodate tall people.

The trunk does not communicate with the rear seat, and it features a windowless lid; although some coupes offer a hatchback as an alternative. Coupes are perfect for solo travelers and couples, but due to their small size, they are not suitable for families.

Convertibles

A convertible is a passenger vehicle that comes with a retractable roof, which allows the user to switch between open and closed modes. In the past, retractable roofs used to consist of a hinged frame covered with a retractable textile-based fabric.

Today, many convertibles have retractable hardtops removed and stored in the trunk. These vehicles usually come with two seats and emphasize the sporty appearance. Like coupes, convertibles are more suitable for singles and couples as they are much smaller than sedans or hatchbacks.

Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs)

A sports utility vehicle, or SUV, is a car that places particular emphasis on passenger seating and cargo capacity. Depending on its size and configuration, an SUV can have anywhere from four to eight seats in two or three rows.

As with the hatchbacks, the cargo area is connected to the rear seat, and features a lift-up tailgate. Many SUVs can also handle rough terrain, thanks to the all-wheel drive they possess, and have the towing capacity of a bus.

Crossovers and Minivans

What sets SUVs apart from hatchbacks and minivans is their bulky, truck-like appearance, and high ground clearance. Remember that the minivan is designed on the body of a small vehicle, with three rows of seats, sliding doors, and capacity for 9 people. It's worth noting that crossover utility vehicles, or CUVs, are often called SUVs and vice versa. This is because they look remarkably similar.

Instead of using a truck's chassis, however, crossovers sit on a regular car's platform, meaning their body and structure are one single piece. Due to their size and capabilities, these vehicles are best suited for families or individuals who enjoy off-roading.

Crossovers and Minivans

A truck is a light vehicle that features an open cargo area in the back, known as a box, with low sides and a rear door. The general purpose of a truck is to transport goods, not people.

As a result, regular pickup trucks have a single row of seats and two doors. However, most trucks have a front bench instead of chairs, allowing three people to sit up front.

Extended and crew cab pickups have two rows of seats, though only crew cab versions have four doors. Bed sizes include standard, short, and long.

In general, trucks have very limited appeal, as they are best suited for people who need to carry or tow heavy materials on a regular basis.

When choosing the type of vehicle that's right for you, there are other things to consider, such as location, driving style, and aesthetics. Also, depending on the distance between your home and the places where you will drive most often, you should consider the aspect of fuel economy. Likewise, if you live in a slightly colder or warmer climate, you should consider a larger body type or better traction. When it comes to deciding, the driver experience is also an essential factor, as well as the sensation of driving a fast or impressive vehicle and the car’s appearance; since, in the end, we have to like the appearance of the vehicle we have.
