Avoid being a victim of Ransomware

What is data hijacking or ransomware?

Data hijacking or ransomware is a type of malicious software (i.e., malware) that blocks access to a device or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware can affect computers and mobile devices, and this cyberattack could target organizations and individuals.

When a device is infected with ransomware, a digital lock or encryption is applied, effectively preventing you from accessing your files or device. If you are infected, you will receive a message from the attacker requesting a payment that will supposedly grant you access to your digital password to unlock your files and device.

How to prevent an infection and be prepared to recover your data if you are a victim of an attack:

  • Avoid links, ads, and unknown websites.

  • Do not download unverified applications or attachments embedded in suspicious emails.

  • Do not access pirated content such as illegally copied movies, music, or programs.

  • Keep software up to date and apply patches to known vulnerabilities. This applies to all corporate devices (i.e., workstations, laptops, mobile devices, etc.)

  • Restart your computer at least twice a week to apply patches.

  • Automatically save copies of your data and documents in a secure location (corporate files should be saved in our network, not in local PCs), daily or hourly if possible.

Acting quickly is crucial in the face of this type of attack.

Don't become a victim of ransomware!
